González And Fernández Combine For Madrid Glory As Argentines Shock Top Seeds

Bea González and Claudia Fernández Sánchez held their nerve to win the Premier Padel P1 event at the Movistar Arena Madrid as Argentine pair Martín Di Nenno and Leo Augsburger shocked the men's top seeds in front of Real Madrid star Endrick to earn their first title.

González and Fernández went into the first event after the 2025 summer break looking to add to their two titles so far this season and they only lost 10 games over their first two matches.

It was tighter in the Saturday semi-finals as the third seeds faced eighth seeds Martina Calvo Santamaria and Alejandra Salazar Bengoechea - hot off a three-set quarter-final win over second seeds Paula Josemaría Martín and Ariana Sánchez Fallada - testing them in a 6-4 7-6 victory.

Up the top of the draw, newly minted number one pair Gemma Triay Pons and Delfina Brea Senesi opened up with a clinical 6-0 6-0 double bagel then only lost 11 more games to reach Sunday's final.

González and Fernández had the head-to-head 2025 advantage going in, but it was the season's most consistent pair Triay and Brea who looked comfortable from the outset to take the first set 6-3.

The Spaniards, though, responded immediately to race through the second set 6-1 by converting all their break points then won heavily on their first serve to clinch the title 6-4 in the third.

Their third 2025 title drew them level with Triay and Brea in Spanish titles won this season, while it also saw them cut the gap to Josemaría and Sánchez by 820 points in the 2025 standings.

Málaga native González, 23, said: "The truth is that I'm very happy, especially because, whether we won or lost, I think we've been working very well. I'm really happy I finally got to shake off the sting from last year when I had to pull out during the final here. It was a really, really sad day."

Fernández, 19, added: "Winning at home, with my whole family here, is just incredibly special."

The men's event was a thrilling affair into the bargain with the top seeds Coello and Tapia overcoming a three-set quarter-final scare against qualifiers to set up a semi-final against fourth seeds Miguel Yanguas and Jorge Nieto, who had cruised through to Saturday's last-four clash.

However, Yanguas and Nieto had no answer to the world number one duo and bowed out 6-2 7-5 as second seeds Alejandro Galán and Fede Chingotto fell to a shock last-eight defeat to Argentines Di Nenno and Augsburger in the bottom half of the draw to leave Galán short on home soil.

The fairytale continued for Di Nenno and Augsburger in the semi-finals as they recovered from losing the first set 6-3 to third seeds Juan Lebrón and Franco Stupaczuk with a gutsy comeback that saw them level at 6-3, then take the deciding tiebreak 7-6 to book a rare Sunday final appearance.

Coello and Tapia were out to land their ninth trophy of the 2025 season and they claimed the first set 6-4, nevertheless Di Nenno and Augsburger reset and came back to level 6-3 in their first final together then captured their first title together by seeing out the win brilliantly 6-4 in the third.

With Real Madrid's Brazilian football star Endrick dropping in to meet the players in front of a packed crowd - after 14,256 watched the Saturday action - it was a day to remember on Sunday.

Di Nenno, 28, said: "Honestly, this has been an unforgettable week. It's true, we'd been working really hard during the break this past month but what happened over these five days since we started playing, it was just one surprise after another. Every match got tougher, and we just kept dreaming. What I'll take away most is Leo's courage in the key moments - how he invited me to jump into his madness, his hunger to win, to chase this trophy we're holding now. So let me dedicate it to him."

After winning his first ever Premier Padel title, Augsburger, 21, revealed: "This day is going to stay with me forever. This win is for my family, and for everyone back home in Posadas who's been supporting me through every match, every moment. Like Martin said, we're going to enjoy this."

The players now go straight to the Paris Major event from September 8-14 in the French capital.

The 2025 season begins another exciting chapter for Premier Padel as the unified global tour continues to expand under the governance of the FIP.
