Interscope Records Introducing the Definitive Sound Series (DSS)
Interscope Records is an American record label based in Santa Monica, California, owned by Universal Music Group through its Interscope Geffen A&M imprint. The label has recently announced the release of a new vinyl collection called the "Definitive Sound Series."
What is the DSS "One Step" Series?
The Interscope Definitive Sound Series (DSS) “One Step” records are a series of vinyl releases where meticulous care is taken to create the best sounding records possible. Each release will be a numbered limited edition pressing with a gatefold “tip on” jacket with the original artwork. These jackets will then be placed in a specially designed DSS slipcase - also featuring the original album art on the front with track listing and transparent One-Step details on the back. These exclusive releases each come with a certificate of authenticity and ship in a custom-made box.
What makes these pressings unique?
The "One Step" vinyl process is a specialized manufacturing technique renowned for its superior sound quality. Traditional vinyl pressing involves multiple steps with the potential for quality loss at each stage. The "One Step" process eliminates these steps with the lacquer master being used to create a stamper which is then used to press the records.
This results in a vinyl record that faithfully preserves the original sound with exceptional clarity and depth, capturing the recordings nuances and subtleties. The "One Step" process is highly regarded among audiophiles and collectors for its unparalleled sound fidelity and represents the pinnacle of vinyl manufacturing craftsmanship.
DSS #1: Dr. Dre's The Chronic
When originally released back in 1992, The Chronic was a single LP with long sides. It was a gift that vinyl even existed for the original release – CDs ruled the day. By 2001, this landmark recording was split across 4 sides which allowed for a more authentic audio listening experience to what Dr. Dre had created.
The Chronic One-Step release takes Dr. Dre’s production to a whole new listening level. The original analog master tapes were completely sequenced and in great shape – ready to cut! We used Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering, where every version of The Chronic had been mastered, to put the magic of the tapes onto the Definitive Sound Series One Step!
Each pressing is individually numbered and limited to 3,000 copies.
